One of the best ways to prevent damage to your boat is by restoring and protecting its surfaces from the harmful UV rays of the sun.

Do I Need Boat Restoration...?

Look... boats are especially prone to oxidation, which causes surface breakdown and deterioration over time—similar to how an apple browns once it's cut open. There are two primary reasons behind this on your vessel, both starting with the letter "S"—Salt and Sunlight. Salt corrodes surfaces, while sunlight deteriorates. Together, they continuously wear away at your boat's surfaces until the damage becomes irreversible.

Boats in SWFL endure constant exposure to intense sunlight throughout the year. Picture being at the beach on a scorching summer day – the heat is intense, and the sun is relentless. The same damage the sun does to your skin... it does to your boat. Nearly every boat could benefit from some degree of restoration. And that's what we do best!

Phase 1: Wet/Dry Sanding

Sanding is essential for properly restoring a boat. While not every boat requires sanding, it's the most effective method for addressing the root cause of oxidation. Oxidation breaks down the gelcoat from the outside in, so the more oxidized your boat is, the deeper it sits in the gelcoat. Compounding will only mask the issue rather than resolve it. Sanding removes the old gelcoat and reveals the fresh gelcoat underneath. Sanding is good for your boat, it saves your gelcoat from long-term damage!

Phase 2: Compounding

Compounding will be the most visual transformation of the restoration process. That's why everyone is so eager to get their hands on a rotary buffer. It's also why people think it does what sanding does. That is completely false. Sanding is much more aggressive than compounding. Sanding removes gelcoat. Buffing refines gelcoat. In this step, we'll eliminate imperfections and scratches, revitalizing the gelcoat to its natural shine using Starke Yacht Care. They utilize the latest diminishing abrasive technology for gelcoat restoration.

Phase 3: Polishing

Polishing is third on the list in the detailing process. What even is polishing you may ask? Polishing is an extension of buffing. It removes swirls, refines scratches even further, and produces gloss that exceeds factory standards. Polishing is completed using a different machine called a random orbital polisher. The design of this machine effectively removes swirls and holograms in gelcoat or paint. Rotary buffers are made to cut, but they compromise finish. Random orbitals on the other hand are designed to finish surfaces before protection.

Phase 4: Protection

Protection is the final step in the restoration process. Without it, oxidation will return, causing your surface to fade once more. At Top Dock Pro, we never cut corners—your restoration will always be done with the most effective methods. Where you have control is in choosing the level of protection. We offer a range of detailing packages with protection options tailored to your needs, including premium sealants, ceramic coatings, and epoxies, depending on how you use and store your boat.
